Day 31 of My Journey from 64 to 65 ProArgi9+ Lipoprotein (a)
Just over a week ago I found out from my son, Simon about Lipoprotein A sometimes referred to as “little a”. Given that this appears to me another marker for cardiovascular disease I have started my own research to find out a bit more about this and if ProArgi9+ might help. For that I need to muscle in the help of the founder of Synergy WorldWide, Dan Higginson. We are both on the case.
What I have been told and learned so far is that Lipoprotein is an important genetic risk for heart disease and stroke. And 1 in 7 people may have elevated levels of Lipoprotein (a). For a long time, it wasn’t well understood, but that’s changing. Much like LDL particles , Lipoprotein(a) particles carry cholesterol in the blood. High Lp(a) levels are associated with higher risk for heart attacks, aortic stenosis, and stroke.
Last Friday I had my delayed annual blood tests carried out and asked about Lipoprotein (a) test. As the practice nurses must follow protocol, I had to arrange a follow up with my GP to ask about the test. That follow up is happening today and I will carry on writing this after we have spoken. All I will say is they have messed up my blood tests.
So, what else do we know about Lipoprotein (a)?
It is important to know that Lp(a) levels are inherited – they’re unrelated to diet, exercise, obesity, and lifestyle. Because Lp(a) is made up of LDL-C and apolipoprotein (a), your Lp(a) levels can contribute to your level of LDL-C (“bad cholesterol”). At present there are no drugs available that can target Lp(a) levels, and the number cannot be reduced by diet or exercise but could a food supplement help. That’s the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question that we will try and establish and at this stage I will not even offer an opinion. Many people who know me will tell you that I only offer information based on sold facts that can be backed up by evidence and validations. Let’s hope we can get some concrete evidence in the months ahead.
