Day 89 Blood Pressure Hypertension

Blood Pressure Hypertension

Following on from yesterday’s post about 220,000 free blood pressure monitors I thought it might be apt to look a little closer at this often referred to “silent killer” .One of the things to remember is that our blood pressure fluctuates, it’s an integral part of flight and fright. It’s one of the reasons why may GP’s will tell you, if their honest, is it is one of the least reliable tests that they conduct in their surgeries. In part because of the fright element or “white coat syndrome.”

The categories I have heard when referring to Blood Pressure are:

  • Low Blood Pressure-Hypotension
  • Normal Blood Pressure
  • Prehypertension or Slightly Elevated
  • High Blood Pressure (Stage 1 Hypertension)
  • High Blood Pressure (Stage 2 Hypertension)
  • Hypertensive Crisis time to call 999

Just prior to my Triple Bypass Surgery I did see my own Hypertensive Crisis as my BP hit 200/100 and when you see that, panic sets in.

As a marker for heart disease Hypertension should be number one, however the number one spot is usually reserved by Cholesterol.

Here is the full list with one notable absentee.

  • Cholesterol deposition (atherosclerosis) or inflammation in damaged inner walls of the arteries is the main cause.

Heart Disease risk factors for inner wall damage include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol levels
  • Tobacco use or smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart diseases
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Age – The older age increases the risk of narrowing arteries
  • Gender: Men are at higher risk
  • Increased stress

The big one missing for me is depleted levels of Nitric Oxide which was the subject of and won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Leading Cardiovascular experts state the following in terms of prevention:

Prevention.

The following measures can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease.

  • Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet which is low in fat and salt
  • Maintain a regular exercise regimen
  • Remain physically active
  • Quit smoking
  • Keep a check and manage the blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels
  • Maintain a healthy height-to-weight ratio.
  • Learn to manage stress effectively

But nothing about Nitric Oxide Therapy. I have repeatedly said in public, on the stage and on here that proper research into this is non-existent and although there have been thousands of papers published on it and its precursor l-arginine there seems to be a strategy being applied to slow any finding down and I wonder why that should be? After all The Hippocratic Oath taken by all Doctors says “I will use my power to help the sick to the best of my ability and judgement; I will abstain from harming or wronging any person by it,” It orders doctors to do their best in their job and not use their skill or knowledge to harm or kill their patients. Best means best, good simply isn’t good enough when it comes to saving lives. Surely their best is to investigate why the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine is ground breaking?
