What lives inside you
On Monday I suggested that everyone puts a couple of bags of sugar together to get the feel of what your Microbiome weighs, apparently it can weigh up to 6lbs. On day 4 I feel as though I have put some weight on, however I am avoiding the sad step until Monday. If I have put on some weight I’m hoping that’s the beginning of my healthy bacteria starting to re populate my previously unhealthy gut.
In a human body we are comprised of about 10 trillion human cells, and these human cells comprise about 100 trillion bacterial cells, making us only 10% human and 90% microbial. I also mentioned this in my post What Lives Inside You on Monday. Even more impressive is that the genetic material of the bacterial cells outstrips our human genes. We have about 1,100 common species of bacteria in our body. This is one of the key reasons why current research is focusing on gut health to promote elite health, #fixthegutfixtheproblem #EliteHealth is the pinnacle of wellness, where age does not dictate ability.
Still today many people and doctors would blame gene’s so would this also explain why many people believe that you are dealt with the hand of cards you are born with? And that despite advancements in medicine, alternative therapies and supplements, you simply cannot avoid the inevitable? I believe otherwise or at least I know you can stack the cards heavily in your favour by eating a healthy diet, exercising and making sure you avoid putting anything in your mouth that is either processed or chemical based.
That said my personal dilemma with this is what about children? All too often we hear of children losing their lives all to early from diseases that they can hardy say let alone spell?
And there are those amongst us who are living with long term illnesses passed on by their families’ genes? I have witnessed this first hand so empathise with anyone who falls into this category. However, my plea to everyone is #lookharder as you may just discover something that might help. It may not cure you but might help you manage your illness more effectively than prescription drugs. As recently as yesterday on prime-time news was a lady who has helped to manage her little boy’s seizures by using cannabis oil. She was in tears when she was sharing her little boy’s illness but that quickly turned to smiles when she said that he used to suffer around 15 seizures every week and had not had one seizure since she gave him cannabis oil. I don’t intend to get into a political debate about the rights or wrongs of cannabis, all I will say is #lookharder, do what’s right for you and do what works for you. BUT don’t suffer from a closed mind, that’s your choice though.
In our microbiome eBook which was written primarily by one my colleagues in the USA, a graduate of physiology Dan talks about the two-different type of bacteria that live inside us Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes. The Bacteroidetes are involved in protein and carbohydrate breakdown and the Firmicutes promote absorption of fat. They need to be in just the right ratio to promote ideal weight and health. In many humans the ratio is now in an imbalance which may be why obesity and diabetes are spiralling out of control. For me I know this to be the case and my purpose during these next three weeks is to reset my gut bacteria so that the ratio is back in balance. This is a process that if followed correctly you only need to do twice a year, providing you don’t stray back to putting too much “poison” or things that are bad for you in your mouth. Everything in moderation and give your body the time it needs to heal.
